KPD: Pedestrian killed in early morning crash identified

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Knoxville Police Department officials are investigating a fatal pedestrian-involved crash that happened on Dandridge Avenue Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the scene, near Hazen Street, around 4:45 a.m., officials said, on the report of an unresponsive person who had been hit by a car. Knoxville Fire Department and AMR personnel tried life-saving measures, but the person, later identified as Sankinna Merchant, 43 of Knoxville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, officers said they believe the victim was walking on the road when she was hit. The driver of the car is cooperating with KPD, officials said.
