Man in custody following Cocke County shooting

Deputies with the Cocke Co. Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting Monday evening.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - One man is dead following a shooting on Crane Way in Del Rio, according to officials with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman called 9-1-1 and said that her husband had been shot by their neighbor while he was in his van, according to a release.

Three children were also involved in the shooting, but were not harmed, the release said. Two children, a 9-year-old and a 10-year-old ran from the car and a 10-month-old remained in the car during the incident, the report said.

Deputies said when they arrived, 35-year-old Joseph Maxwell Carter was found in the driver seat of a white van dead from gunshot wounds.

Investigators arrested 65-year-old James Dennard Raspberry. Raspberry was charged with first degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of reckless endangerment with deadly weapon.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.
